The Hell Creek Formation was a forested floodplain environment that is recorded in the rocks of the western United States. This is where the youngest non-avian dinosaurs in the fossil record lived. They are some of the last dinosaurs to live on Earth and give us incredible insight into the lives of these amazing creatures. Many major dinosaur groups like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops are recorded in the Hell Creek Formation and many modern animals can be found here as well such as lizards, turtles and small mammals.
High Plains Paleontology and its leadership have traditionally hunted the Hell Creek because of its immense potential to yield fossils. This formation has afforded us opportunities to study numerous aspects about the inhabitants of this ancient ecosystem. So much about what we've learned from North American dinosaurs can be traced back to this rock formation and as we progress, it is fair to say that our interest in this formation will only intensify.
